Overview

Blackrock Health Blackrock Clinic is recruiting a Clinical Nurse Specialist for Oncology in South Dublin.

The oncology service includes general oncology beds and an adjacent day-care chemotherapy unit.

About the role

The Clinical Nurse Specialist coordinates and manages oncology patient care from diagnosis through recovery or throughout the continuum of illness.

The role works closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high standards of care for patients receiving chemotherapy and for patients experiencing complications related to chemotherapy or their disease.

The post combines direct clinical care, patient advocacy, staff education and support, research, audit, policy development, quality improvement and service development.

The CNS forms part of the senior nursing administration of the hospital and supports the Director of Nursing and senior colleagues.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide direct specialist nursing care to oncology patients and their families
  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Support higher-level clinical decision-making, including patient suitability for treatment and management of pain, nausea, mucositis, fatigue and psychosocial issues
  • Coordinate cancer treatment with pathologists, consultants, radiologists, medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology teams
  • Act as a nurse adviser, clinical role model and specialist resource within the hospital
  • Promote health in line with the National Cancer Strategy 2017–2026 and NCCP guidelines
  • Develop oncology nursing guidelines, policies and chemotherapy-safety education for staff
  • Advocate for patients and facilitate referrals to physiotherapy, psychiatry, dietetics, social work, palliative care and community healthcare providers
  • Provide patient and family education on vascular access devices, chemotherapy regimens, symptom management and support resources
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary monthly oncology case conferences
  • Initiate, participate in and evaluate oncology audits and evidence-based practice improvements
  • Support service development and establish links with national and international oncology experts

Requirements

  • Current registration on the NMBI Live Register
  • Minimum five years of post-registration nursing experience
  • At least three years of oncology experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Higher Diploma level 9 qualification in Oncology
  • Recognised oncology course
  • Bachelor of Nursing degree is desirable
  • Front Line Managers Course is desirable
  • Computer skills are desirable
  • Leadership, communication, management and multidisciplinary teamwork capability
  • Valid permission to work in the Republic of Ireland or eligibility for a Critical Skills Employment Permit
