Overview

Beacon Hospital is recruiting a Uro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist within Cancer Services in Dublin.

The post reports to the CNM 3 Cancer Services.

About the role

The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical, psychological, emotional and information support to patients with urological cancers and to their families or significant others.

The service covers patients with bladder, kidney, prostate, testicular and penile cancers during investigation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

The post holder provides a proactive, comprehensive and coordinated service within the multidisciplinary team.

The role includes developing, implementing and embedding clear urological cancer patient pathways in line with National Cancer Control Programme recommendations and evidence-based practice.

The post holder may provide cover and support for the Urology Day Unit and other Cancer Services Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess patients, plan, implement and evaluate specialist uro-oncology nursing care
  • Provide specialist support throughout diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for urological cancer patients
  • Coordinate clinical cancer pathways and liaise with urology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, allied health and other service providers
  • Independently review patients and clinical situations and make autonomous management decisions within scope of practice, including requesting imaging
  • Provide sensitive information, psychological support and counselling to patients and families, including discussions related to diagnosis, disease progression and treatment options
  • Coordinate follow-up for surgical urology cancer patients, including investigations for recurrence, referral and discharge when appropriate
  • Support weekly urology multidisciplinary team meetings and coordinate clinical follow-up after MDT review
  • Develop education programmes for staff, patients and carers
  • Maintain patient registers and clinically relevant data aligned with National Cancer Control Programme requirements and key performance indicators
  • Lead or contribute to nursing and multidisciplinary audits, research, clinical standards, pathways and service-development work

Requirements

  • NMBI Registered General Nurse in good standing
  • Postgraduate course completion in Clinical Practice with a focus on Urology, or currently working towards this qualification
  • Minimum five years of post-registration experience
  • Three to five years of experience caring for urology patients
  • Experience in oncology
  • Ability to work autonomously within the NMBI Scope of Practice
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Teaching ability, leadership qualities, professional judgement, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload, multitask, share specialist knowledge and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
