Overview
Beacon Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse for its Oncology Day Unit in Dublin.
The post is responsible for delivering a high standard of patient-focused oncology care.
About the role
The Staff Nurse works within a multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receiving chemotherapy have continued access to specialist care, knowledge and expertise.
The role includes the administration of prescribed cytotoxic chemotherapy through cannula, PICC, Hickman or Portacath in accordance with Beacon Cancer Centre protocols.
The post holder provides information to patients and families on treatments and potential side effects.
The position contributes to quality management, audits, accreditation, health-promotion initiatives, training and clinical induction of new staff.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver safe, patient-focused nursing care in the Oncology Day Unit
- Follow Beacon Hospital and Department of Health policies for the safe administration of cytotoxic preparations
- Administer prescribed cytotoxic chemotherapy using approved protocols
- Provide written and verbal information on cancer treatment and side effects
- Facilitate effective communication between the multidisciplinary team, patients and families
- Assess staff competencies and allocate patient-care assignments
- Delegate tasks in line with legal, professional and departmental requirements
- Maintain clear communication with the Nurse Manager regarding unit needs and incidents
- Contribute to risk management, quality improvement, audit and hospital accreditation processes
- Support staff education, orientation, professional development and clinical supervision
Requirements
- Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland Registered General Nurse licence in good standing
- Oncology-related postgraduate qualification desirable
- Two years of clinical experience preferred
- Oncology nursing experience preferred
- Teaching ability, leadership qualities, professional judgement, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask and manage time effectively
- Recent and relevant experience in a specialised area and acute hospital setting
- Strong communication, planning, organisation and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
- Commitment to quality, patient dignity, confidentiality and ongoing professional development
